Our Mission & History

MTLA offers reliable, compassionate, culturally competent, educational, and evidenced-based holistic therapeutic services.  Our team of professional therapists and educators have high level credentials and training.  They also have many years of experience in the fields of social work, counseling, child welfare, psychology, and substance abuse.

Our History

Mary Leo and Tom Leo developed their first contract, with the Department of Children and Family Services, to provide counseling services to individuals and families in 1975.  From the beginning, therapeutic services to families had a systemic focus.

The agency attempted to service, not the individual family members, but rather the family as a system and looked for strengths in the entire family system.  The therapists of the agency also focused on developing a collaborative working relationship with the macro system of social workers, clinicians, and legal personnel involved with the people participating in services.  Services have always been provided in both English and Spanish.

In the early 1980’s, Mary and Tom began to bring parents together into parenting groups which developed into a training focus.  Please see the list of current parent training seminars the agency provides.  Knowledge is power for parents in managing their children.  MTLA not only works with intact families but also families that are involved in the court systems whose children may have been placed out of the home.  MTLA has a variety of contracts with various agencies across Chicagoland.
